How They'll Use the Award

William Land Elementary is a public K-6 school located in the heart of downtown Sacramento steps away from the State Capitol with a diverse population of varied socioeconomic levels, ethnicities, and home languages spoken. The school offers both a traditional GATE cluster program, a Dual Language Mandarin immersion program, and arts-integrated lessons across content areas.
Currently, all our teachers collaborate with teaching arts with a music, theatre, and poetry focus. Each class receives a minimum of a 10-week unit of arts integrated lessons for each art focus to bring art into other content areas such as social science, English language arts, science or math. Through these experiences, teachers are addressing Visual and Performing Arts standards and provide students with a unique experience to learn content outside of their textbooks, explore their creativity, build self-confidence, and build collaboration among student peers.
Funding for these academically enriching experiences are made possible through grants and funds raised through our dedicated parents and staff. If granted the $10,000 award, we will have the capability to expand and sustain our arts integration program to include professional development for school staff and increased units of instruction for our students.
