How They'll Use the Award

The Scholar Dollars grant will be used to update the Plymouth Elementary library to better meet the needs, abilities, and interests of our students and their families. As a school that offers a comprehensive coding curriculum and a dual-language Mandarin immersion program, our library needs to be equipped to support our students’ success. We need books that are up-to-date, diverse, and useful to our students and families, as well as tools to access those books. Almost 75% of our library collection is over 20 years old. A large portion of the grant will be used to purchase books that are more relevant and appealing to our 5- to 11-year-old students with a special focus toward technology and Mandarin language materials. We will also acquire books for a parent resource library including titles on cutting-edge child development and parenting research (in English, Spanish, and Chinese, when available) and materials to help parents support their children’s learning. As a Title I school, these are resources that may otherwise be difficult for our families to access. Our library also needs a computer for students to learn and practice library research skills, so a portion of the grant will go toward providing students with access to our library database and other online resources. We will also use grant funds to update the library space to better foster a joy of recreational reading while adding equipment to make it more multi-functional and able to serve as an alternative classroom for special programs.
