How They'll Use the Award

David W. Long Elementary School is a TK-5th grade public school in Etiwanda School District. Our school serves over 800 students each year. If we were fortunate to receive the grant, we would be able to use it to impact the students during the instructional day and with extended learning opportunities beyond the school day. The funds would be allocated towards year 2 of our guided reading initiative. This will include adding 1,200 leveled reader titles that can be used across grade levels for differentiation providing high-interest titles to our students. These resources would help provide supplemental resources for teachers to use during universal access for our range of learners. In addition, this would be able to assist in supporting our extended day learning opportunity through our Reading Academy that meets twice a week throughout portions of the school year providing over 30 hours of additional on-level reading development to over 80 students including our ELL population in need. Students work with a teacher an instructional aide in small group settings in this fun, learning environment. Additionally, this would help to provide funds for the technology program that supplements the instruction. It would enable us to provide a smaller staff:student ratio during UA by providing an instructional aide in 1st-5th grade twice a week for 45 minutes. This would help to provide intensive support during the school day in reading and/or math.

Thank you for considering our request as we continue to serve the students in the city of Fontana. At DW Long, we believe that we are developing lifelong learners that “Learn Today to Lead Tomorrow.”
